Description | Newspaper advertisement: "PROSPECTUS OF THE NAZARENE ADVOCATE, To be Published at Matagorda, in the Republick of Texas. THE avowed object of this publication, is the re-vival of 'THE SECT OF THE NAZARENES,' in primitive purity. 'And he came and dwelt in a city called Naza-reth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.' Math. ii. 23. 'For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews through-out the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.' Acts xxiv. 5. Being firmly convinced that 'all scripture is given by inspiration of God,' we look upon the iaspired [sic] writings as the only guide to the most important of all truths. While we follow these writings we can-not err; but should we depart from them in the smallest degree, or recognise any human authority as odligatory [sic], we open the door which may lead us to destruction. We therefore hold all uninspired writings as of no binding authority in religion; and we regard all forms of belief, written since the days of the apostles, as but so many attempts of the devil to usurp authority in the church. The doubts which rest upon the minds of a por-tion of mankind, of the authenticity and credibility of the inspired writings, which are found in the bible, arise, not from the absence of ample testimony to sustain these writings -- but from a criminal aversion and indolence, which prevents them from seeking and examining that testimony. We have sought out and examined the testimo-ny, and it has brought conviction home to our heart. We are forced by omnipotent truth, to confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; and that he was sent of God to enlighten and redeem the world. -- The religion which Jesus taught, reveals to us the character of God, and the character of man; and the duty which man owes to his Creator. It points out a method of pardon for offences, through the atone-ment of Christ. It shows us the true church. We are assured of the resurrection of the dead, in trans-cendent sublimity; and of a future state rewards and punishments. The followers of Jesus Christ have a promise that they also, shall partake of the divine nature. "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be parta-kers of the divine nature, having escaped the cor-ruption that is in the world through lust." II. Pe-ter, I 4. The religion taught by Jesus Christ was peculiar in its origin; and in the means by which it was propagated. In its promulgation, it needed not ihe [sic] implements of war to sustain its onward march; it was sustained by the power and providence of God. The early followers of Jesus were rendered irresisti-ble by the sublime nature of the truths and maxims which they taught; and by the meekness, sincerity and purity of their lives. Let the true followers at this day, arm themselves with the like weapons, and they shall go on conquering and to conquer. The divine bless-ing will crown the battle with victory. The Editor, having retired from the busy scenes of life, will devote his leisure, to the preparation and selection of matter suited to the important object of the publication. The paper will be a foolscap sheet, and will be published monthly, so soon as a sufficient number of subscribers shall be obtained; and the terms of subscription will be one dollar per annum, payable at the end of the year. All persons wishing to become subscribers, will be pleased to forward their address without delay, (postage paid,) "To the Editor of the Nazarene Ad-vocate, Matagorda, Texas." Editors, friendly to the cause of truth, are in-vited to publish the above. Matagorda, October 25, 1837. 12 -- tf." |
