Newspaper article: "The Alamo Monument. --This tastefully executed structure, which some of our citizens may have seen at Austin or Washington, and which is executed of stone taken from the walls of that ever memorable fortress, and dedicated to the martyrs who fell within it. at the dawn of our revolutionary struggle, is now exhibiting in New Orleans. It bears upon it, the names of all who fell at the Alamo; Travis, Crockett, Bowie and Bonham, appearing prominent upon the four sides of the obelisk. The upper panels present the following sentences: "To the God of the fearless and free is dedicated this Altar, made from the ruins of the Alamo. Blood of heroes hath stained me; let the stones of the Alamo speak, that their immolation be not forgotten. Be they enrolled with Leonidas in the host of the mighty dead. Thermopyle had her messenger of defeat, but the Alamo had none." The work was executed by Mr. Nangie, formerly a resident of San Antonio; an Englishman by birth, and we believe a self-taught artist. He is now dead."
