Quilt. Handmade star medallion quilt. White cotton channel-quilted field. Vari-colored Lone Star or Star of Bethlehem pattern in center. Broderie perse floral appliqués. Blue and white sawtooth-type border around center and as perimeter edging. White woven binding. Cotton stuffing. Made in 1840 by Mrs. John Bancroft Root (née Mary Porter). She lived in Independence, Texas, where she died in 1850 of yellow fever. This quilt was presented to the museum by the daughters of Mr. Alexander Porter Root.
