Button / charm string made at the turn of the century (1896) by Ada Ross Bartholomew, grandmother of James Bartholomew. This "button string" is made of various types of materials, including brass and glass. There are also decoratively painted ones aand plain, solid ones. Many of the brass buttons are either molded or engraved. Charms Strings. Most of these long strings of buttons, sometimes called "memory strings" were made by young ladies. The fad of making button strings started in the 1860's. The fad remained popular until the 1900s.
