Hammer has heavy iron head with flat and blunt striking surfaces on both sides. Center of head has hole through which wooden handle passes and is secured by wedging 5 iron nails in top of handle. Short handle is natural wood and has a slight bend of around 30 degrees. Hammer has name of A. C. Mitchell penciled on it so it was taken renumbered 870-1, the donor's accession number, instead of 9000-103.
