Tanned buckskin vest has five buttons. Comments: Vest is said to have been Samuel Maverick's (1803 to 1870.) Sam Nesmith says the buttons are of the 1850 period. Maverick was a Texas land baron and legislator who made his home in San Antonio and owned land throughout west Texas. He was a two time mayor of San Antonio. The term "maverick" for an unbranded cow comes from his name as he let his cattle roam free.
