Mid-nineteenth century German settlers brought with them to Texas the late classical Biedermeier style, Germanic forms of furniture, and traditional methods of construction. The block feet, plinths, flanking columns, and broad, flat arch of the chest section reflect that late classical style. The desk section simply rests on the chest rather than being attached, a typical Germanic feature. The wide, open central section of the desk interior is also commonly seen in German desks of the period.
