Hill Texas Archive Research Notes |
Founded by John M. Wilson, took on partner Marion J. Durham after the Civil War. By 1869, Wilson had sold all his interest in the company to Durham. Wilson's slaves were the potters, two of whom were trained in the craft, Hyram and James. After the war, it is believed that Isaac Suttles was employed as one of the potters. Much of the work at the Guadalupe Pottery was conducted by slaves and emancipated African-Americans. Both salt-glazing and alkaline-glazing took place in this pottery, which supplied stoneware to a wide area of central Texas. |
