Made in Texas: Art, Life & Culture 1845-1900 brings together objects and art made in Texas in the last half of the 1800s. The exhibition reflects the lives of Texans over a period of time that began with the entrance of Texas into the United States in 1845 and ended with the discovery of oil at Spindletop in Beaumont and the devastation of Galveston during the Hurricane of 1900. Texas grew from about 210,000 people in 1850 to more than 3,000,000 residents in 1900. By then, it was the sixth largest populated state in the nation.

Some people think the history of Texas is about cowboys, Native Americans, freedom fighters, and Texas Rangers. Those are all part of Texan heritage, but these objects reveal the lives of other Texans, too - immigrants, former slaves, students, parents and children, silversmiths and furniture makers, painters and potters, and even a city mayor. This exhibition shares the diverse stories from the beginnings of Texas statehood by examining a broad range of objects that have survived over multiple generations.
